Gijs Bakker, born in 1942 and trained in Amsterdam and Stockholm, is a designer and jewellery maker, and co-founder of Droog Design with Renny Ramakers. In 1974 he designed the Strip chair for Castelijn, a piece held in museum collections, including those of the MFAH in Houston and the National Gallery of Victoria.

The principle comes down to a few gestures: curved strips of wood draw the legs, seat and back in a single line. The joins between the strips set a rhythm of fine lines across the chair, and the ash veneer, left visible beneath the black finish, reveals a well-marked grain. They stack, which makes them as practical as they are graphic.

Very good condition: the black finish is even, with only fine signs of use on a few backs. The lot comprises four chairs, and a fifth is available to complete the set.

Each chair measures 78 cm high, 53 cm wide and 44 cm deep. Around a dining table or lined up in an entrance hall, they bring a clean design with nothing superfluous.

https://www.treaptyque.com/en/products/ensemble-de-4-chaises-strip-noires-par-gijs-bakker-pour-castelijn-70s
