Milan, 1970s. Fontana Arte, founded in 1932 around Gio Ponti and Pietro Chiesa, made thick cut and polished glass its signature, in that unmistakable aquamarine tint. This round ashtray is a pure expression of it.
The piece is cut from a disc of solid glass, whose thick, flat, bevel-polished rim holds the light in green and turquoise reflections. A shallow bowl, smooth as a lens, is ringed by a step and cut with several cigarette notches. No decoration: the material and its transparency alone make the object.
Good used condition: the glass is clear, with no chips or cracks. A few scratches remain underneath due to its age, but nothing dramatic.
At 16 cm in diameter and 2 cm high, this ashtray sits on a coffee table, a desk or a console, and also makes an elegant catchall tray. A mineral, luminous object from one of the great houses of Italian glass.
