Italy, 1970s. Compressed Murano glass, with its melted-ice textures, appealed to designers of the time for its raw, sculptural look. Combined with a sober black base, it forms this square ashtray with an architectural spirit.
The black lacquered wood base consists of two square plates separated by a band of clear glass, which draws a luminous line along the edge. On top sits a block of compressed glass with an irregular, ice-like relief, hollowed with a wide round bowl and several organically shaped cigarette notches. The contrast between the matt black mass and the worked transparency of the glass is the strength of the piece.
Good used condition: the glass is clear, with no chips or cracks; the black lacquer shows a few small marks of use on the edges, consistent with the age of the piece.
At 17 cm square and 6.5 cm high, this ashtray sits on a coffee table, a desk or a console, as an ashtray or a catchall tray. A graphic, sculptural object, typical of 1970s Italian design.
