Italy, 1960s. Fontana Arte, founded in Milan in 1932 by the master glassmaker Luigi Fontana with Gio Ponti, then artistically directed by Pietro Chiesa and, from 1954, by the Frenchman Max Ingrand, was then exploring the sculptural possibilities of thick glass, at the border between utilitarian object and decorative piece.

This large basket, 25 x 25 cm and 6.5 cm high, is distinguished by its subtly rippled, sea-green glass and its elongated pointed corners, which lend it a striking graphic presence. The dense, slightly irregular glass captures light with depth, and a hollow circle marks the centre of the base.

Very good state of preservation, with remarkable transparency for a piece of this period. Two tiny chips on the corners, barely visible, have been polished to round them off and conceal them as much as possible. A very beautiful piece.

Both sculptural and functional, it is ideal as a centerpiece or display piece, for lovers of modernist Italian design.
