Tuscany, 1970s. Arnolfo di Cambio, the crystal maker of Colle di Val d'Elsa, entrusted designer Fabio Frontini with the "Azteca" collection, in which solid crystal is worked like cut stone. This pair of large ashtrays is one of its most sculptural expressions.
Each very thick clear crystal disc has a side ribbed with fine vertical flutes evoking ice or rock, while the smoother bowl is hollowed with fine concentric circles. Two cigarette notches, modelled in the mass like fluid flows, break the roundness of the circle and give it an almost organic movement. The two identical pieces mirror each other.
Good used condition: the crystal is clear, with no chips or cracks, with light surface marks and a few signs of use on the rims and in the bowls, consistent with the age of the pieces.
At 20 cm in diameter and 5 cm high each, these generously sized ashtrays sit on a coffee table, a desk or a console, together or apart, as ashtrays or catchall trays. A sober, powerful pair of crystal from a renowned Italian house.
