Milan, 1970s. Fontana Arte, founded in 1932 around Gio Ponti and Pietro Chiesa, became a benchmark of Italian glasswork. This square ashtray is a discreet expression of it, cut from a thick slab of crystal.
The piece plays on the purity of solid glass: a square block with sharp edges, hollowed with a mirror-polished round bowl, edged with four cigarette notches. The slightly green tint characteristic of the maker's crystal shows on the edge. A functional object reduced to its essential geometry.
Good overall condition: a few light surface scratches from use and no notable chips. The piece comes from Milan.
At 10 cm square, this ashtray suits a desk or a coffee table, on its own or as a catchall tray. A classic, sober piece from one of the great houses of Italian design.
