Italy, 1940s. Cast bronze, the noble material of smoking accessories, takes here an unexpected sculptural form, far from conventional round or square ashtrays. A pre-war piece of great sobriety.
The rectangular bowl, with softly curved sides, flares into four lobes, two of which are cut as cigarette rests, underlined by a small arch in relief. The thick, sculpted underside rests on a recessed foot that lightens the mass of the bronze. The whole has a modernist, almost architectural silhouette.
Used condition: the bronze has taken on a dark, nuanced patina, with a few small spots of greenish oxidation and light white dots on one side, consistent with the age of the piece. No dents, no warping.
At 11 cm long, 8 cm wide and 2.5 cm high, this ashtray slips onto a desk or a coffee table. A discreet, patinated object, a witness of 1940s Italian design.
