Milan, 1970s. Fontana Arte, founded in 1932 around Gio Ponti and Pietro Chiesa, made thick cut and polished glass its signature, in that unmistakable aquamarine tint. This set of five ashtrays on their stand is a rare and complete version.
Each of the five ashtrays is cut from a thick disc of aquamarine glass, with a bowl smooth as a lens and a rim ringed with polished steps. They stack in a chrome stand made of a round base, two guide rods and a square tubular handle. Stacked, they form a glass cylinder punctuated by luminous layers; laid flat, they spread around the table.
Good overall condition: the glass is clear, with no chips, with fine surface scratches from use; the chrome of the stand keeps its shine with light signs of age. The set is complete: five ashtrays and their stand.
At 10 cm in diameter and 2 cm high each, with a stand 14 cm high and 12 cm wide, these ashtrays spread across a large table to welcome guests, or stack into a compact, sculptural object. An elegant set from one of the great houses of Italian glass.
