Italy, 1970s. Fontana Arte, founded in Milan in 1932 around Gio Ponti and Pietro Chiesa, made thick cut and polished glass its signature, in that unmistakable aquamarine tint. This round catchall tray is a pure expression of it.
The piece is cut from a disc of solid glass, whose thick, flat, bevel-polished rim holds the light in green and turquoise ripples. At the centre, a shallow bowl, smooth as a lens, holds keys and small objects. No decoration: the material and its transparency alone make the object.
An exceptional piece, with no chips. A few surface scratches remain underneath, but they are practically invisible once the piece is in place, and the visible face remains clear.
