In the 1930s, Italian production of office items and storage accessories was fully aligned with the Art Deco vocabulary: clean lines, contrasting materials, precise wood-metal assemblies. Rosewood, with its pronounced grain and deep chocolate hue, was then a wood of choice for prestigious pieces.
Rectangular varnished rosewood box with lid, circa 1930. Stepped profile structure — slightly overhanging lid, low plinth base — highlighted by black lacquered edges on the corners. Central handle composed of two superimposed rectangles in gilded brass and brushed chrome metal, forming a play of planes characteristic of the aesthetic of the period. Natural raw wood interior. Metal hinge. Piece purchased from a private collection in Rome. Designer and publisher unidentified.
Good overall condition given its age. Rosewood with a beautiful deep and even patina. Some visible surface defects — micro-chips on the lacquered edges, slight wear at the corners — consistent with a piece of this period and provenance. Solid and presentable overall.
