Italy, 1970s. Woven metal, alternating gold and silver plates in a checkerboard, was a decorative technique much loved by Italian design of the period, between silversmithing and geometric pop. This box is a fine example.
The body and lid are made entirely of small square plates of brass and silver-plated metal, assembled in a regular checkerboard weave and framed in polished brass. The inside, lined in gold leatherette, continues the play of precious materials.
Good overall condition: the weave is complete and the plates keep their shine, with a few minor micro-marks of use on the brass.
At 15.5 cm long, 11.5 cm wide and 6.5 cm high, this box sits on a desk or a console. A graphic, precious object, typical of 1970s Italian decorative design.
