France, 1940s. The Compagnie de Saint-Gobain, heir to the royal mirror manufactory, was then shaping tableware in the thick bevelled glass that made its name. This ashtray is a delicate witness to it, with a distinctly Art Deco elegance.

The sea-green glass plate, rectangular with corners cut into facets, is bevel-polished all around. On the surface, wheel-engraved decoration draws a crown of small scallops around the oval well, punctuated with stylised flowers, with four cigarette rests cut diagonally. The underside keeps its original cardboard backing.

Good condition of use: the glass is clear, the engraving crisp. Small marks of age and a few tiny chips remain on the edges, nothing serious given the age of the piece.

At 14 cm wide by 1.5 cm high, this ashtray sits on a desk or console, and also makes a pretty catchall tray. A fine, discreet object, typical of French glass of the forties.
