Italy, 1960s. This table ashtray carries the original gilt label of Gioielleria Bernuzzi, a jeweller's shop in Cremona, the city of the luthiers and of Stradivari. Silver and wood come together here with great restraint.
The ashtray, in thick glass cut with notches, sits in a sleeve of brushed 800 silver. The hallmark, the "Fatto a mano" (handmade) mention and the initials GB can be seen on the inner rim. Two bands of bent wood, set into the metal, run around the piece, and the inside base is lined with wood. The weight of the whole speaks to the quality of the craftsmanship.
Acquired in Florence in 1968 as a wedding gift. Very good condition: beautiful patina on the silver, a few small signs of use, and a very slight impact inside the glass, with no effect on the object.
At 16.5 cm in diameter by 6.5 cm high, it sits on a coffee table, bar or console, or serves as a jewellery dish or catch-all. A heavy, very rare piece.
