The Netherlands, 1970s. Gijs Bakker, born in 1942 and trained in Amsterdam and Stockholm, is a designer and jewellery maker, and co-founder of Droog Design with Renny Ramakers. In 1974 he designed the Strip chair for Castelijn, a piece held in museum collections, including those of the MFAH in Houston and the National Gallery of Victoria.

The principle comes down to a few gestures: curved strips of wood draw the legs, seat and back in a single line. The joins between the strips set a rhythm of fine lines across the chair, and the ash veneer, left visible beneath the black finish, reveals a well-marked grain. It stacks, which makes it as practical as it is graphic.

Very good condition: the black finish is even, with only fine signs of use. Offered as a single chair, it can also complete a set of four identical chairs.

It measures 78 cm high, 53 cm wide and 44 cm deep. On its own as a spare chair or added to a table already set, it brings a clean design with nothing superfluous.
