Italy, 1960s. Fontana Arte treats glass as an architect's material, cut, polished and bevelled to its purest form. This large catch-all is a sculptural version of it, of rare elegance.
The thick, translucent water-green glass forms a boat shape with upturned, faceted points at each end that catch and diffract the light. A broad polished circular flat makes up the base, accented with three small brass studs. A discreet engraved mark can be made out on the rim.
Very good condition: a few light signs of use and a tiny nick on the rim, barely perceptible. The brass studs have developed a verdigris patina, consistent with the age of the piece.
At 26 cm long by 17 cm wide and 8 cm high, it sits on a console, coffee table or desk, to hold keys or loose change, or is simply admired as an object of light. A graphic, luminous piece.
