Founded in 1921 as Friesche Stoel- en Houtwarenfabriek, Fristho was, alongside Pastoe, Artifort and Gispen, one of the main Dutch furniture manufacturers of the post-war period. In the early 1950s, the company worked with designers such as William Watting and Inger Klingenberg to introduce a Scandinavian-inspired aesthetic, with Rio rosewood as its signature material.
The lid illustrates this vocabulary well: four veneer panels laid out in a checkerboard, playing on the direction of the grain to create a discreet geometric effect. Solid wood body with rosewood veneer, original brass hinges and lock, interior divided into two separate compartments.
Very good overall condition. The wood has been waxed, with no visible scratches, and the proportions have stayed crisp despite the age of the piece. From the private collection of an Amsterdam enthusiast whose entire interior is furnished with period Fristho.
Dimensions: 34 cm long, 22 cm wide, 12.5 cm high.
Ideal as a storage box on a sideboard or a chest of drawers, for documents, mail or small precious objects.
