Germany, 1969. Luigi Colani, a designer of organic forms, was in-house designer at Kusch+Co, a seating manufacturer founded in 1939 by Ernst Kusch in Hallenberg, from 1968 to early 1969. Several of his designs for the firm were produced only in small numbers, which makes this armchair rare.
A deep, round shell, like a bowl set at an angle, holds the seat: it is covered in a teal jacquard fabric, woven with a fine pattern of geometric hatching that plays with the light. A chromed metal tube draws the whole: a ring on the floor, two loops that lift the shell, and a rod that wraps around it. The seat seems to float above the ground, held by small pieces of brushed metal.
Good overall condition, on visual inspection: the fabric is clean, with very slight signs of use, and the chrome remains shiny, with a few light traces of oxidation.
Low and enveloping, it measures 62 cm high, 84 cm long and 82 cm deep, with a seat at 43 cm. A strong piece, to be placed alone in a living room, a reading corner or an entrance hall.
