Italy, 1970s. This was the era when tortoiseshell-effect resins and gilded metal were happily combined in desk and reception objects, for a discreet and highly graphic luxury. This catch-all tray, found in Milan, is a fine example.

A square stepped base with moulded edges in tortoiseshell-effect resin: the top, a deep lavender with a hammered relief veined in brown, contrasts with the finely layered caramel edge. At the centre, a recessed amber disc holds a round gilded-metal dish with a domed rim, simply set in place and removable. The underside, in plain caramel, rests on four small pads.

Beautiful patina on the tortoiseshell, which has turned over time to a lavender violet. The metal shows a few knocks, scratches and small traces of oxidation, without consequence: a piece with a past.

At 15 x 15 cm and 4 cm high, it finds its place on an entryway, a console or a desk, for keys, loose change or rings. The dish lifts out to be emptied in one gesture.
