In the 1970s, Italian design widely explored plexiglass as a noble material in its own right. Cut into thick blocks, beveled, and faceted, it was combined with gilded metal in desk objects and table accessories intended for refined interiors. The transparency of the material and the play of internal refraction then constituted a graphic challenge in itself.
Square trinket tray made of cut transparent plexiglass block, circa 1970. The structure features pronounced chamfers at the four corners and internal faceting work producing complex optical effects. The central cup is made of removable gilded metal, with slightly raised circular edges. Precise assembly, typical of Italian production from this period. Designer and publisher not identified. The plexiglass is in perfect condition, with no scratches or yellowing. The metal cup has a beautiful, uniform gilded patina, with slight traces of use visible up close — consistent with its age.
